Pandemic, Tendon, Renovation – Part 26

25 September 2020

We had a series of thunderstorms roll through the county last night. Interestingly, they never reached my house. It’s like they all ended at I95 about 1/2 mile from my house. Honestly, that’s not unusual. When I lived half a block off Highway 1 back in the 80’s, it was not uncommon to see rain showers abruptly stop at the midline of the north/south lanes of Highway 1 – I mean dead center stripe.

Part of the reason is the weather pattern set up by the ocean. During the day, land heats up very quickly compared to the ocean and you get convection currents that pull sea breezes into the land during the day. At night, the land cools more quickly than the ocean and the convection currents reverse causing breezes to move away from the beach.

At a very specific time of day, where these convection currents meet, rain storms can occur where it looks like a line was drawn into the sand (or Highway 1) for the showers.

Last night, I got the showers but not the thunder and lightning – other than hearing it approach. They never quite got to the house. Today we have an 88% chance of more showers. Again, this is very late in the season to have this many showers.

Baxter Restoration called yesterday and told me to expect a cabinet installer to show up at 9:30 this morning. It’s now 9:55 am and no one has shown up yet nor have they called. From the way Robert talked, they would tear the old upper cabinets out and install the new ones in one day. I have my doubt considering they are already behind their own time line.

Still no word on the glass doors for the upper cabinets nor the spice rack, nor the crown molding replacement. Even though this has dragged on since March of this year, I have to admit Baxter has really, really tried to get things done effectively and efficiently and I certainly have no complaints with Citizens Insurance’s response to the damage to my house. Of course, I’ve not received my renewal notice yet with potential cost increases.

It’s funny about insurance. Growing up in Mississippi, I can’t remember anyone having insurance. Most people didn’t carry car insurance, no one I knew had medical insurance nor homeowners. If you went to the doctor, you paid for an office visit – eventually as much as $20. If a prescription was written, you went to the pharmacist and paid whatever the price was for the drug. Our only problem was mother was somewhat of a hypochondriac and she managed to get Dr. Clark to do credit. She eventually ran up quite a bill with his office.

When did getting insurance become such a necessity? I understand about the need when banks write a mortgage for home or business, but when did we get to the need to have an insurance-industrial complex (apologies to Dwight Eisenhower)?

Lately, I’ve been having trouble with my Apple devices. Usually, there is a pretty harmonious synchronization between the watch, the iPad, iPhone and the iMac. Since the last update on all of the devices, everything seems out of sync – kind of like 2020. Sometimes technology advances too fast for its own good. I suspect the next three or four updates will eventually alleviate the problem but that’s probably months down the road.

How about that? I just received notices of updates for the iPhone and iPad. Seems like I wasn’t the only one to notice the problems.

Just received a call from Baxter. They can’t make it today. One of their jobs in Miami got called for the need for a permit that requires no permit – or so they said. I thought everything needed permitting – even painting a wall inside a house. In any case, Robert will be dropping of some additional boxes for me to pack up stuff in the cabinets and will start my job on Monday morning. Wait and see!

Robert just showed up with more boxes for me to pack away glassware and canned goods. Guess I’ll have something to do on Saturday other than clean the house and wash clothes!

The weather made good on the 88% chance of showers with a flood watch and two very heavy downpours.

Stay tuned and stay safe!
