Pandemic, Tendon, Renovation – Part 29

29 September 2020

So far, the cabinet crew is only an hour late. That’s not too bad, considering. However, I do need to run an errand and I can’t leave until they get here.

So, they showed up around 10 am and there were three in the crew this time. They seem to work methodically and make sure everything fits.

I ventured out of the house for the first time in a week by heading to Publix. I was running low on milk and out of blueberries for my cereal. Wouldn’t it be interesting if I developed Covid for lack of blueberries?

After shopping with pleasure at Publix, I headed over to Colee Hammock in Fort Lauderdale to take a look at Michel and Nancy’s construction of their new house. The street was blocked and I chanced to see Michel in the street. She came over and we caught up. I’ve not seen either of them since the pandemic has started – we’ve talked but not seen each other. The reason the street was blocked was the construction company was putting on the concrete roof. The whole house is reinforced concrete so it should withstand a hurricane. It also has a second floor to which they can evacuate if the lower floor floods.

It was garbage pick up time and I was blocking the street so I said my goodbye and headed home. A lot of progress had been made in my absence.

All the upper cabinets have been installed. Now come the doors, the pull out drawers, crown molding, and a couple of other loose ends. Dare I hope this will be completed by the end of the day?

Florida has seen a rise in cases again. Yesterday, Florida reported 738 new cases of Covid with 5 new deaths. Everyone was beating their chests and saying how great we were doing. Today, the count is 3,266 new cases and 106 new deaths. Not so much bragging today.

And yet, the governor opened up the state. Here’s a Sun-Sentinel photo of the famous Elbo Room on the beach on September 27th, two days after the governor opened up bars and restaurants. Notice how many are practicing social distancing and wearing masks.

Lately – well, ever since the pandemic – I seem to be wearing my emotions on my tee shirt sleeve (it is south Florida). Movies make me cry more so than before, passages in gay romance novels make me tear up, and I have periods of sadness during the day. Maybe it’s the state of the country and the upcoming election.

My personality certainly derived from my Dad. He would hold his emotions end and only when they built to a crescendo would he release them. I certainly take after him on that. I was always been an emotional kid. I think I felt things deeper and with more intensity than most. I think that’s why I was so involved in religion as a kid – it was an emotional crutch for things going on in my life.

God only knows when all this crap will be over. Looks like the election results may not be known until the end of November and then we probably can look forward to a perfect storm of litigation about the results. If – and that’s a big if – a vaccine can be developed by November, it’ll be over 6 months before it can become available to those who need it most – first responders and probably another 6 months before it is available to the population as a whole.

I think that’s why I like music so much. True, we all can relate certain experiences to tunes we have heard in our past but music and also uplift. My recommendation is to listen to more music. Another recommendation is to start your own diary or blog to allow you to free up your thoughts. It’s good for the soul.

My music suggestion for this post is Conway Twitty’s “It’s Only Make Believe.” Years ago, my friend Joel was the manager at a store in Boca Raton when this song came on from a sound track I made the store. Most of the women in the store thought it was Elvis. Joel quickly disabused them of that notion. You can’t fool a southern boy with Elvis and Conway.

Update! They completed the upper installation and actually put two three doors on the cabinets over the stove. More importantly, they reinstalled my microwave. They even got some of the crown molding installed.

They may or may not come back tomorrow – I should know by 9:30 am and regardless, they will be back Thursday and Friday. I still haven’t received the other glass door for the middle cabinet nor the spice rack pull out. Hopefully, before the week is out I’ll also have the pull out drawers installed and I can start using the cabinets again.

Stay tuned and stay safe!
