Everything Fred – Part 516

1 January 2025

Happy New Year! It’ll take me a while to switch over from typing 2024 to 2025. Here’s hoping we all have a more healthy new year.

Speaking of health, it appears I’m closer to cataract surgery these days. My ophthalmologist has scheduled a call with the woman who handles insurance. This place does laser surgery with panoptic lenses. I’m still deciding if I want that or if I want monofocal lenses. Medicare will not pay for laser nor for anything but the monofocal lenses. I have some money put aside for cataract surgery if I want the panoptic, but I’ll have to see how much it really costs.

My neighbor, Rian, who sadly is no longer with us, used to fuss about how rich my soil in the yard was compared to his. Trust me, I didn’t do anything to make it better, it just seems to be. This was brought home to me the other day when I took out the garbage and noticed how many earthworm castings were in the lawn.

At least earthworms know not to poop in their own house. They stick their tail end out of the hole and deposit the fecal castings. From the looks of it, I have either a very active earthworm or a real colony of them. They really enrich the soil.

I talked with my brother this morning, wished him a Happy New Year, and found out he missed the tornados in Mississippi. I read in the online news that the state had 22 tornados touch down with 2 deaths. Tornado season in Mississippi is more typical in the spring of the year. Mississippi gets some very strong tornados, including F5. Florida gets tornados and water spouts but they are usually not that destructive and are F1 on the Fujita scale. I still occasionally have nightmares about tornados from growing up in Mississippi.

Other than AJ coming tomorrow to take down the tree, I don’t have much scheduled this week. A group of us will go to lunch on Friday, but otherwise I’ll have a lot of time on my hands.

Maybe I’ll get some yard work done. Stay tuned!

After 34 years in the classroom and lab teaching biology, I'm ready to get back to traveling and camping and hiking. It's been too long of a break. I miss the outdoors and you can follow my wanderings on this blog.
