Everything Fred – Part 148

1 November 2023

My birthday has not started auspiciously. I got 8 hours and 25 minutes of sleep last night thanks to a Temazapan (sleep) and Tramadol (for arthritis in hands) but the night before I only got 3 hours and 6 minutes. Yesterday I was constantly pouring fluids into me to combat dehydration. This morning I got of bed dizzy and close to fainting and thus, dehydrated , so I started pouring down fluids again this morning. I’ll continue to do that throughout the day. My fluids of choice are coconut water, Gatorade, and filtered water from the fridge.

Part of the dehydration is due to Jardiance I take to keep my heart healthy and my glucose under control. But remember, every action has an opposite but equal reaction, and as a consequence of Jardiance, I urinate more which means I become dehydrated. If the medications and chemo don’t kill me, they may actually cure me.

After pouring liquids into me yesterday, by late afternoon I started to feel a little better. At least I wasn’t having to sit down maneuvering between rooms. I decided to try a third recipe from The Washington Post. I chose the pillowy pull apart dinner rolls.

Here’s what they are supposed to look like.

Here’s what mine looked like.

Yes, they have been baked. They never rose. I followed the recipe exactly and I’ve never had yeast not rise for me. The one thing in the recipe that gave me pause was to add hot milk to the flour/yeast mixture and you don’t usually do that. The dough never felt right when I was mixing it in the stand mixer.

So, out of the three recipes I’ve tried from The Washington Post favorites, one was OK (chiles rellenos casserole ) one was blah (pinto beans) and one was a failure (pillowy pull apart dinner rolls).

I find that recipes that are posted on Facebook or Instagram just don’t work. I’ve tried a few and finally figured people thought the photos looked good and simply reposted the page without trying the recipes. One real disaster was for a 7-up cake on Facebook. It turned out to be a gooey mess. I’ll learn to stick with more recipes from published cook books or other sites.

Strangely, the New York Times recipes usually turn out well but that’s not been my recent experience with The Washington Post.

I have two more recipes from The Washington Post but I’m leery of trying them now.

It’s a beautiful morning in the neighborhood. Temperature was 69°F this morning with low humidity. I wish I felt well enough for a walk around the neighborhood but it might cause a distraction to the neighbors if they found me passed out on the sidewalk.

The sprinklers are working as they should. Chris’ and my work (mostly hers) paid off. Most people don’t realize but Broward County is still under water restrictions for sprinklers. We were put under the restrictions years ago and are only allowed to sprinkle lawns two days a week. Most people ignore that but since my sprinklers are on a timer, I’ve never reset them. Most people down here water too frequently anyway and often get a buildup of dollar weed (Hydrocotyle umbellata) , a semiaquatic plant.

I plan to spend the day on getting hydrated. Hopefully, I’ll get a nap in somewhere but after 8 hours of sleep, I doubt I’ll doze off. No trick or treaters last night so turning off the porch lights seem to have worked.

Stay tuned!
